Scoliometer with Carrying Case
This scoliometer provides a way to measure the degree of rotation in a deformity of the back found on routine spinal examinations. A storage pouch and complete detailed instructions are provided with the scoliometer.
Basic Screening Steps:
1. View the patient from behind, standing erect.
2. Ask the patient to extend their arms forward, placing their hands together, palms flat against each other (as if they are diving into water).
3. Ask the patient to bend forward slowly, stopping when the shoulders are level with their hips.
4. View the patient's spinal curvature. Adjust the height of the patient's bent over position to the level at which the deformity of the spine is most pronounced.
5. Lay the scoliometer across the deformity at a right angle to the body, with the zero mark over the top of the spine. Let the scoliometer rest gently on the skin (do not push down). Read the number of degrees of rotation. Screenings are considered to be positive if the scoliometer reads 7 degrees or more at any level of the spine. These patients that test positive should immediately be referred for further medical evaluation.
