Raising Awareness on World Mental Health Day

In honor of World Mental Health Day, we wanted to shed some light on mental health challenges that children face in the United States. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) says that one in five youth live with a mental health condition, but less than half of them receive needed services. When conditions go undiagnosed and untreated, it can have a major impact on the child’s ability to learn and lead a healthy lifestyle both at home and at school.

Often, students will visit the school nurse’s office for help with their mental health challenges. As a school nurse, you can help students who are struggling by offering a safe space to talk, speaking with families and healthcare professionals if you have a concern about a student, and utilizing information from organizations like the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).
