How to Educate Students on the Importance of Hand Washing

By now we all know how to properly wash our hands, but with constant reminders from family members and the media to regularly wash hands, students may begin to tune it out and lose sight of why hand washing is so important. That’s where hand washing education from school nurses can make a big impact.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hand washing education from schools and the community at large will greatly help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Not everyone realizes how often they touch their face throughout the day, how easily germs can spread from the body to food, and how long germs remain on everyday objects like tables and handrails.

As a school nurse, you can use products like Germbusters and Glogerm™ to demonstrate not only the trail of contamination, but how washing hands can still leave many germs behind. These visual representations will paint a picture about germs and hand washing that students won’t soon forget. It will encourage them to follow proper instructions for hand washing in order to limit the spread of disease.
