Helping girls navigate the challenges of puberty

Puberty can be a very awkward time for girls with body changes, acne and mood swings. Take yourself back to middle school. If Mother Nature catches you by surprise, so many feelings could be running through your head, not to mention the pain and discomfort you may be experiencing.

This seemingly small issue is especially important and can be a forever memory for some girls.

Girls typically reach puberty anywhere between the ages of 8 and 14. No matter the age, they begin to experience the changes that accompany this stage in their lives, some girls may struggle with mood shifts and discomfort that they have trouble  verbalizing. School nurses are uniquely qualified to address menstruation and the natural process of growth and development with students and are often the first person to help a young student deal with the sometimes embarrassing and uncomfortable milestone of their first period.

This is why it is so important to have a supply of feminine hygiene products on hand plus a quick change of undergarments, a heating pad, and even a hygiene kit available when needed.

Read how school nurse Sam Bastian, RN, MS, APNP-BC helped A Fitful Fifth Grader navigate the challenge of her first period in our Henry Street blog series. If you have a puberty story you’d like to share, send it to [email protected].
