Last November, Cynthia Robbins, RN, BSN, won a Nurse Mates® Ultimate Signature Traveler packed with goodies after submitting a touching story about how being observant and persistent helped a student get the help he needed to overcome a serious health condition.
From today through March 31, 2022, school nurses across the country have an opportunity to win a Nurse Mates® Ultimate Signature Traveler with a Pediatric Dermatology DDXDeck by submitting a story of their own for MacGill's Henry Street Story Contest.
What are Henry Street Stories?
MacGill’s Henry Street Stories are written by school nurses for school nurses. These touching, funny or inspiring stories reveal new ideas and perspectives and provide connection. “A Long Way from Henry Street” is a two-volume collection of stories written by school nurses and published by MacGill School Nurse Supplies in 2003 and 2012. The series gets its name from the Henry Street Settlement, a humanitarian organization that funded the first school nurse in 1902.
Now MacGill is collecting and sharing new stories as a way to inspire other school nurses and to create a place for school nurses to connect with their community.
Ideas and Examples
Don’t let a case of writer’s block stop you from entering. Your story does not have to be about a particular topic or a certain length. And you don’t have to be a strong writer to submit a story. Our marketing team will serve as your editors and will ensure that you sound polished without changing the meaning of your story.
Sometimes an example of another nurse’s story is all it takes to bring your own winning story to mind.
- Read our last winner’s story.
- Check out Laughter on Henry Street, with excerpts from some of the stories we received that lightened our days with a laugh.
- Peruse our all of the Henry Street stories on our blog, like one about helping a young girl face puberty, children with adult worries, and more.
- Get your very own copy of A Long Way from Henry Street, Volume 2 at no cost to you by adding item #72012 to your next order.
Still not sure what to write about? Here are some ideas to get you thinking:
- Does a child who used to be one of your “frequent fliers” now come by just to say hello? Share your story.
- What was the scariest situation you’ve been a part of as a school nurse and how did you resolve it?
- What is the most unexpected malady you’ve encountered as a school nurse?
- Children can come up with the most interesting reasons to visit the nurse, even when really just trying to get out of a math test or maybe PE. What’s the most creative reason you’ve heard? Tell us about it.
- Do you have a go-to statement or question that seems to help when a child does not need to be sent home but does not seem to want to return to class? Tell us a story about a time when your go-to statement has worked well … or maybe when it hasn’t.
